If you make a hatch map based on area objects, the areas will normally be given a fill color.  If the hatch map is based on curve objects, then there is nothing to fill.

If the boundary file you started with contained area objects, a common way this can happen is if you check the Areas to Curves option in the GS Boundary Import Options dialog.  This converts any area objects into curve objects.  This option should normally be left unchecked.

If you have confirmed that the objects are areas, choose Map | Map Properties.  In the Hatch Map dialog, double click on any box under the Fill column.  Verify that the Fill Pattern is solid and that the Foreground color is specified correctly.  Click OK.  Repeat for each class in the table.  Finally, on the right side of the dialog, verify that the Draw type is set to Hatched Area.
