Surfer 10
Surfer 10 allows for transparent fill colors and transparent layers.

To make just the color fills transparent (leaving the contour lines and labels solid):

1. Select the Contours layer in the Object Manager.
2. In the Property Manager, go to the Levels tab.
3. Change the Level method to Advanced and click the Edit levels button.
4. In the Properties dialog, click on the Fill header button.
3. In the Fill dialog, click on the Foreground Color button.
4. In the Colormap dialog, you can set individual colors to be transparent or you can set all colors at once.
    a. To set all colors at once, be sure the Apply opacity to ALL nodes is checked and set the Opacity value to what you want via the slider control. 100% opacity is opaque. 0% opacity is completely transparent.
    b. To set the opacity for individual color nodes, uncheck the Apply opacity to ALL nodes check box, select a color node and change the opacity value for that node via the Opacity slider control. Repeat for all nodes you want to apply opacity to.
5. Click OK, OK and OK.

To make the entire contour map layer transparent (including color fills, contour lines and labels):

2. In the Property Manager, go to the Layer tab.
3. Set the Opacity to be what you want.
