Large data files can take a long time to import or redraw.
When importing the data file, check the "Create Post Map" check box. Creating the post map will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to import the data. Also, you can go to the Symbol Properties tab in the Define Import Options dialog and use a very small symbol size (like 0.01). Smaller symbols also help.
You might also consider turning off the Auto Redraw (View | Auto Redraw). Make any changes you need to, and then redraw the image to see the results (View | Redraw). Redrawing all the points automatically after each change may take a long time.
