Contour labels can be missing from contour lines, or disappear when the map is overlaid with a larger map, due to the default settings for displaying contour labels based on the Font size, Curve Tolerance, Label to Label Distance, and Label to Edge Distance. You can adjust these settings to help display the contour labels.
If adjusting those settings do not help, you can force labels to show up by right clicking over the map and going to Edit Contour Labels.
Ctrl-click on the map to add labels at any location along the contour
lines. You can also drag labels along the contour line to reposition
them. Hit Esc on the keyboard to save the changes. Be
aware that this should be done last. Any other editing of the contour
map will loose the custom label edits.
To change these settings in Surfer 10:
- Select the Contours layer in the Object Manager.
- In the Property Manager, go to the Levels tab.
- Set the Level method to Advanced.
- Click the Edit Levels button.
- In the Properties dialog, click the Label button to display the Labels dialog.
- Increase the Curve Tolerance to a large value, i.e. 1000, and decrease the Label to Label Distance and Label to Edge Distance to a small value, i.e. 0.01.
- You may also need to click on the Font button to reduce the size in Points.
- Click OK and OK.
Surfer 9 and previous
- Double-click on the map to display the Contours Properties dialog.
- Click on the Levels tab
- Click on the Label button to display the Labels dialog.
- Increase the Curve Tolerance to a large value, i.e. 1000, and decrease the Label to Label Distance and Label to Edge Distance to a small value, i.e. 0.01.
- You may also need to click on the Font button to reduce the size in Points.
- Click OK and OK.
