You can use Surfer to create a cross-section with a series of formations or horizons. Grid each layer, choose the Grid | Slice command to extract a slice through the GRD along the trace defined by a line or lines in the BLN format.

The BLN format is an ASCII format consisting of a header line with the number of vertices, followed by the XY coordinates of the vertices. The following example draws a line from (1.0,1.0) to (2.0,3.0). 2
1.0 1.0
2.0 3.0

The easiest way to display a cross-section in Surfer is to create a post map with X from column D and Y from column C. If the default 1:1 scale is not appropriate for the cross-section data, double-click on the post map, click on the Scale tab, remove the check mark from the Proportional XY Scaling option, and specify the desired X and Y Length.

To display the slice with lines connecting the points in Surfer, open the slice DAT file, move column D to A, C to B, delete column E, and add a blank row at row 1.  In cell A1, enter the number of rows of coordinates. For example, if there are 48 rows including the header, there are 47 rows of coordinates, so enter 47 in cell A1. Save the changes to a BLN file extension, and create a base map from the BLN file. Change the Scale of the base map to turn off Proportional XY Scaling, and enter reasonable values for the X and Y Length, such as 6 inches for the X and 2 inches for the Y.

Repeat the directions for multiple horizons, and combine the BLN files into a single file by cutting and pasting the values in different worksheet windows.

For different fill colors and patterns, add values for the corners of the base map, copy the first value at the end of the list to close the polygon, and change the header to reflect the additional values. Keep each layer as a separate polygon, create separate base maps for each BLN file, and overlay the maps by selecting them with the Edit | Select All, and overlaying with the Map | Overlay Maps menu commands.

Another option is to create the slice DAT files in Surfer, and create the cross-sections in Grapher using the DAT files.  Grapher has the ability to add fill between curves, simplifying the process of displaying the data.
