There are a few ways that different symbols can be used for each bin value. Each method is described in detail below.
Method 1: You could use the "bin" column as a clipping column. This method allows different sizes, colors, and symbols for each bin. To use this method, you would need to create as many line/scatter plots as there are bins in your worksheet. After the first line/scatter plot is created, click once on it to select it. Then, follow these steps:
- In the Property Manager, click on the Clipping tab.
- Check the box next to the Use criteria command.
- Click on the Criteria command where it says <Click here to set criteria>.
- Check the Use column criteria box and click the Add button.
- Type in the first value (1) and click OK.
- Change the column to Column C: bin and click OK.
- Only the points with 1 in the bin column will be displayed.
- Click on the Symbol tab and change the Symbol, Fill color, and Line color to the desired style and color.
- Repeat the clipping and symbol process for each additional line/scatter plot for each bin value.
Method 2: You could use the "bin" column as a symbol indicator column. This method allows different symbols for each bin, but all of the symbols use the same color and size. To use this method, create a single line/scatter plot and then follow these steps.
- Click once on the plot to select it. In the Property Manager, click on the Symbol tab.
- Change the Symbol frequency to 1.
- Change the Symbol column to the column in your worksheet that has the bin values in it. The symbols will change based on the value in the column.
- To determine what value to use in the worksheet, click the Symbol. Select a symbol and the symbol shape and number are shown. Use this number in your "bin" column.
Method 3: You could create a classed scatter plot where the "bin" column is the class. This method allows different symbols, colors, and sizes for each bin. To use this method, follow these steps:
- Create the graph using the Graph | 2D XY Graphs | Class Scatter Plot command.
- Select the worksheet and click Open. The default class scatter plot is created.
- Click once on the class scatter plot to select it. In the Property Manager, change the X column, Y column, and Class column as needed. The Class column is the column in the worksheet that contains the bin values.
- Click on the Classes command where it says <Click here to edit classes>.
- Change the Number of classes to the number of different bins that you have in your worksheet.
- Change the Method to "Equal number." The classes should be listed as 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc.
- To change any of the values or the symbol color, style, or size associated with a class, select the class and press the Properties button. After making all changes, click OK in the dialogs and the graph will update to show the different symbols.
