Grapher requires that data be in columns to create a graph.  If your data is in rows, you can use a spreadsheet program like Excel to transpose the rows to columns.  Once the data is in columns you can easily create a graph in Grapher.  You are welcome to send a request for a transpose feature to graphersupport@goldensoftware.com.

Here are two methods to transpose data in Excel:

Method 1: Excel function =TRANSPOSE()

The Excel function is =TRANSPOSE(). This function works on an array of cells and changes the rows to columns. Here are the steps that you will need to use this function.

  1. In Excel, select the Sheet 2.
  2. In cell A1, type
                    =TRANSPOSE(
    then, switch to Sheet 1 and highlight all of the cells with data that you want to convert. You should select all of the cells (A1:P45, for example). After the cells are selected, switch back to Sheet2 and end the function by typing a ). The function should look like:
                    =TRANSPOSE(Sheet1!A1:P45)
  3. Now, you need to select in Sheet2 all of the cells that will be involved. The number of rows involved is equal to the number of columns in Sheet 1.  Since we used columns A-P, you will need to select 16 rows.  The number of columns to select is equal to the number of rows in Sheet 1.  Since we used rows 1-45, you will need to select 45 columns.
    NOTE: Excel does have a limitation on the number of columns, so you may need to do the transpose in steps. After each step, you can copy the information into Grapher's worksheet.
  4. With all of the cells selected, press F2 and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. This tells Excel that the equation is an array equation.  The cells will be filled with the correct information.
  5. This transposed sheet can then be used to create a graph in Grapher.

Method 2: Edit | Paste Special

  1. Highlight the row or cells in the row that you would like to transpose and select Edit | Copy.
  2. Select the cell in the new column you will transpose your row to and select Edit | Paste Special.
  3. In the Paste Special dialog box, select Transpose.  Click the OK button.
  4. Your row data will be pasted in a column.
  5. Save your Excel sheet.  Use this new Excel sheet in Grapher to create a graph.
