One of the new feature of MapViewer 7 is the addition of US City, State as a Pin Locating Method.
The US City, State locating method places
pins on the map based on city and state names from two columns in your data file.
The location coordinates are read from the CityState.csv file included with
MapViewer (located by default at C:\Program Files\Golden Software\MapViewer 7). The state can be specified as
the full name or the two letter abbreviation. The CityState.csv file has over 30,000 city and state names.
- If your city is not in the correct location, edit the latitude and longitude listed in the CityState.csv file.
- If your city is not recognized (error message below), add your city to the CityState.csv file.
The MapViewer 7 Error message that says "The database can't find X city in the state of Y"
(replace X with your city and Y with your state) is because the city
and state are not currently in the .CSV file. Edit the .CSV file to
include your city, state, longitude, latitude, and you will no longer
receive the error. MapViewer will then place your city on the map
using this locating method.
For example: The current city of Grand Rapids, Michigan in the .CSV file displays a pin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This can be confusing to many customers, as there are two cities of Grand Rapids in MI and this is the lesser known and less populated city in Ontonagon county in the Upper Peninsula (-89.2756, 46.76583). There is a much larger, and more recognizable city of Grand Rapids, Michigan located in Kent county in the Lower Peninsula. Change the latitude and longitude in the CityState.csv file to the Lower Peninsula coordinates (-85.6681, 46.76583) in order to properly display the location of Grand Rapids.
There are a variety of free locations on the internet to find the exact latitude and longitude of a city.
