Here is how to find what ZIP codes are within the different DMA areas:
- In a new, blank map, import the DMA
shapefile from your ESRI CD. Specify Unprojected lat/long for the
projection and choose appropriate attributes for the PID and SID.
- On the same layer, make a pin map of the US ZIP locations from the file
c:\program files\golden software\mapviewer7\extendedzip5.csv. Set the
Locating method to coordinate, Coordinate units to Lat/Lon, PID =
Column A: ZIP Code, X = Col B, Y = Col C. Go to the Classes tab and
set the Pin method to Use uniform symbol. Choose the symbol you want
to use and set it's size to .001.
- Create a "Region" from a DMA area of interest using Analysis | Define Region | By Selecting. In the Define Regions by PIDs dialog, click on the PID of the DMA area of interest and click OK.
- Now, use Analysis | Query to find the points (ZIPs) within the region (DMA
area). In the Query section of the Query dialog, there are three
controls to specify what you want to happen. They aren't labelled, but
these three controls can be called (from left to right), the query
action, object type, and scope. For the query action, choose "Create
worksheet with". For the object type, choose just Points. For the
scope, choose Regions. Then click OK. This will create a new
worksheet with the ZIPs that are located within that region.
- Save this worksheet in whatever format you want.
- Switch back to the map, clear the region with the Analysis | Clear Regions command and repeat steps 3-5 for the other DMAs of interest.
