Q: I have a DXF file containing 3D polylines. When I import this file into Surfer, it only displays the two dimensional information. How can I get the 3D data into Surfer?
A: Surfer does not read Z information in 3D DXF files. You can either convert the 3D DXF file to an XYZ data file, grid it, and use the grid file to create the maps, or you can drape the 3D DXF file on a 3D wireframe map and turn off the visibility of the wireframe map.
To do either of these, use the free DXF2XYZ utility* to create an XYZ data file.
Once you have the XYZ data file, use the Grid | Data command in Surfer to convert the XYZ data into a grid file. You can then use the grid file in Surfer to create contour, 3D surface, wireframe, or other map types.
If you wish to see the polylines only on a 3D surface, use the Map | New | 3D Wireframe command to load the grid file as a 3D wireframe map, then use the Map | Add | Base Layer command to load the DXF file as a 2D base map draped on the 3D wireframe. In the Object Manager, uncheck the check box to the left of 3D Wireframe to turn off the visibility of the wireframe map.
