To create a simple lithology log, without specifying the additional data necessary for the lithology log type, use a zone bar log. All you need in your data file is 4 columns of data, but you could have more if you like. You can enter this data directly into Strater in an Interval data table, or you could save this data in an Excel file. In this example, you can enter and save the data in an Excel file.

The necessary data columns to have are:

  1. Hole ID
  2. To (the start of each interval or lithologic unit)
  3. From (the end of each interval)
  4. Lithology Keyword (such as Granite or Mudstone).

The steps are:

1. Open Strater

2. Go to Tools | Log Items | Zone Bar

3. Click in the log pane where you want the log to be placed.

4. You are prompted for a data file. Navigate to your data file and click the Open button.

5. Walk through the data import process:
   a. In the Specify Worksheet Column Definitions window, check "Specify Column Header Row" if you have a column header, and set the starting and ending rows of data if you do not want to use all the data in the worksheet. Click Next.
   b. In the Specify Data Type and Column Positions window, Interval (From-To) will be automatically selected as the data type. Specify which data fields in your worksheet are the Hole ID, From, and To fields and click Load.

6. The log is created. It now may be necessary to edit the default log properties so that it looks the way you want it to. Select the log and in the Property Manager:
   a. Set the Data Column to the data field containing the lithology keyword.
   b. Set Use Keyword Scheme to True. A keyword scheme was automatically created when you created the zone bar log.
   c. Set Keyword Scheme to the correct scheme (make sure the scheme is configured for the correct data field).
   d. You can click to the right of Keyword Scheme and click on the (...) button to open the Scheme Editor. You can open the keyword scheme for the log and make any changes you want to the fill patterns for each keyword item within the scheme. Click OK in the Scheme Editor and the changes are applied.

7. If Strater created a keyword scheme, but for the wrong data column, you can go back to the data table and create a scheme based off your lithology keyword (right click over the keyword column in the data table and go to Create Scheme). Then you can update the data column and scheme for the zone bar log in the borehole view.
