To draw a floating North arrow
symbol in Surfer, follow these steps:
- Create a new point object using the Draw | Symbol
command.
- Click on the screen where you want the north arrow to
be displayed.
- After the point is drawn, press Esc on the
keyboard to exit drawing mode and select the point.
- In the Property Manager, on the Symbol
page, change the Symbol Set to either GSI Default Symbols or
GSI North Arrows.
- Select a North arrow symbol.
- Change the Size to make your north arrow larger
to fit your needs.
- You can rotate the North arrow using (Arrange |
Rotate) to make sure it lines up correctly with the North orientation.
To add a North
arrow that moves with the map, create a post map with the desired location of
the north arrow and overlay it with the other maps:
- Create a data file in the worksheet with the XY map
coordinates where you wish the north arrow to appear on the map. You can
get the coordinates from your map, by simply moving the cursor over the
location you want and viewing the XY coordinates in the status bar. If north is rotated on your map (not pointing "up"), enter the rotation value in a separate column.
- Select the map and go to Map | Add | Post Map, specify the DAT file name, and click Open.
- The post map will display the default cross-hairs
symbol. Select Post in the Object Manager.
- In the Property Manager, on the General tab, if you entered a rotation value, open the Worksheet Columns section and set the Angle to the column with the rotation value.
- Under the Default Symbol section, open the Marker Properties section.
- Change the Symbol Set to
either GSI Default Symbols or GSI North Arrows.
- Select a North arrow symbol.
- Under Symbol Size,
set the Sizing method to Fixed size.
- Change the Symbol Size to 1.00 inches
