Grapher requires worksheets that contain numeric or date/time data to create a graph.  If your data are in categories, you will need to use a slight work around to create your graphs in Grapher.

If your data looks similar to this:

 Categories  Values
 Apples  17
 Bananas  23
 Oranges  14

Follow these steps to create your line/scatter graph in Grapher.
  1. Create your graph as normal using the Graph | 2D Graphs | Line/Scatter command.
  2. Select the data file and click Open.  The default graph is created.
  3. With the plot selected, open the Plot tab in the Property Manager.  Change the X column to Row Number or Sequence Number.  The difference between Row Number and Sequence Number is that Row Number always use the row of the value. Sequence Number starts numbering at 1, regardless of which row the data is in.
  4. Verify that the Y column is set to Column B.
  5. Click once on the X Axis 1 to select it.
  6. In the Property Manager, open the Tick Labels tab.  Scroll down and open the Major label text section.  Change the Label source to From worksheet.
  7. Click on the Worksheet command where it says <None >.  Select the data file.
  8. Change the Data column to Row Number or Sequence Number (keep the same as in step 3 above).
  9. Change the Label column to Column A.  Your graph should now look contain categories for the X Axis labels.
  10. Depending on which rows are displayed, you may need to open the Worksheet rows section and change the First row and Last row values.

An alternative to these steps with a bar chart is to use the Graph Wizard.  The Graph Wizard has a category bar chart, making the steps a bit easier.

  1. Click the Graph | Graph Wizard command.
  2. In the Plot Categories, select Bar.
  3. In the Plot Types, select Category Vertical or Category Horizontal.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the worksheet and click Open.
  6. Set any additional properties and click Finish.
