To export a 3D DXF file and display the 3D surface in AutoCAD, follow these steps:
- Create a contour map by going to Map | New | Contour Map, selecting your grid file and clicking Open. The contour map is created. You can double click on the contour map and adjust the contour interval if you wish.
- Once the map is the way you want it, select the map and go to Map | Export Contours (do not use File | Export).
- Give the file a name, specify a location, and click Save. The 3D DXF file is exported and the Z values for the contour lines are saved.
- You can use this DXF file in AutoCAD to create a 3D surface. For example, in AutoCAD 2000 and 2002, you would simply need to open the DXF file and use the View | Shade | 3D Wireframe command. This will project a 3D version of the DXF file. You may want to use the View | 3D Orbit command (AutoCAD 2002) to rotate and tilt the display to a desired angle:
