| I have a Surfer 6 file that contains a smoothed contour map. When I open it in a newer version of Surfer, it looks different! |

Surfer 6 simply uses a different algorithm to smooth the contours from the Contour Map properties dialog box. So opening any SRF file that was saved in Surfer 6 with this smoothing option enabled into Surfer 7 or higher will be smoothed differently. This is difference is expected.
There are a couple things you could do:
1) You could export the maps from Surfer 6 as raster images (TIF, BMP, JPG, etc.) and import those into the newer version of Surfer as a base map.
2) You could smooth the grid file itself, not just the contour lines. This will make any map created from this grid file in any version of Surfer look the same. Smooth the grid file by going to Grid | Spline Smooth prior to creating the contour map.
