If you export your Surfer project as an EMF file and insert the EMF into Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, or copy and paste a surface map from Surfer into Word/PowerPoint, and then print either to a PostScript printer or a PDF printer driver (ie. Adobe PDF or CutePDF), the surface maps can have a black background on the print out or in the PDF file.

The reason is because the surface map is raster-based and is created with the OpenGL graphics engine. A transparent "mask" is applied to make the background transparent. The problem lies with converting the output of an EMF file to PostScript, either in the PostScript printer driver or in the PDF file. Apparently, PostScript and PDF are unable to handle the background mask and render it as black. Other map types (ie. contour maps and wireframe maps) do not have this problem with the unwanted black background because they are vector, or line-based, maps.

To work around the problem, you can do one of the following things:
  1. Disable the Break Apart Metafiles option in Word or PowerPoint (if available).
  2. Export the surface map from Surfer to a high resolution image format (ie. TIF), and insert the image into Word or PowerPoint.
  3. Print to a non-PostScript printer driver (one without PS in its name). You may need to install a new non-Post Script printer driver for your printer in this case.
  4. Copy the map from Surfer and use the Edit | Paste Special command in Word or PowerPoint to paste the surface map as a Bitmap instead of a metafile.
