You can assign coordinates for image base maps in the base map properties:

1. Go to Map | Base Map, select your image file and click Open.
2. When the image is loaded as a base map, double click on it.
3. In the Map: Base Properties dialog, on the Base Map tab, type in new values for the xMin, xMax, yMin and yMax values.
4. Click OK.
5. Now the base map is referenced in the coordinates you entered.

The above method requires that you enter the coordinates of the lower left and upper right corners (the x and y Min and Max values).

If you do not know what these are, but instead know the coordinates of points within the image, you can use our Didger software to georeference the image and import it into Surfer, or follow the instructions in our online newsletter article “Calibrating Bitmap Corners from Points Within the Map in Surfer 7” on the last page of Issue 43.
