Gridding high numbers of data points, especially when those data points lie along lines, can sometimes cause irregular contour maps. You can try:
1. Thinning out the data so there aren’t quite as many data points along the lines. If you are digitizing the data points from an original contour map that you are trying to recreate, please see some hints on point spacing here: http://www.goldensoftware.com/newsletter/Issue37Didger.shtml.
2. Changing the gridding method and/or options (ie. including the Anisotropy value).
3. Reducing the number of grid lines in the grid file.
4. Use Grid | Spline Smooth after the grid has been created to smooth the grid and remove some of the artifacts.
5. If there are just a few areas, you can open the grid in the Grid Node Editor and modify the Z values of particular grid nodes. Save the grid and recreate the contour map.
