To calculate the length or planar area on a map, the steps you can do depend on the version of Surfer you are using.
Surfer 9 and 10 Surfer 9 and 10 automatically calculate the length and area for polylines and polygons in a base map. If you have polygons or polylines in a base map, simply double click on one of the objects and in the properties dialog, go to the Info tab to see the length and area values.
If you want to draw the objects on the map and calculate the length and/or area, you can do so by drawing them inside a base map. To do this:
- Select your existing map and go to Map | Add | Empty Base Layer.
- Select the new empty base layer in the Object Manager and go to Arrange | Enter Group. You are now "inside" the base layer object.
- Go to the Draw menu and select either polyline or polygon.
- Draw your polyline or polygon over the map. Create as many objects as you wish.
- When you are done, hit Esc on the keyboard to exit draw mode.
- Go to Arrange | Exit Group.
- Select one of the drawn objects and in the Property Manager, go to the Info tab to see length and area values for that object.
Surfer 8 and previous If you are using a previous version of Surfer, we have a script that will calculate the length and area of polylines and polygons in a BLN file. The script is located at: http://www.goldensoftware.com/public/scripts/surfer8/AreaLengthBln.bas. Open the script in the Scripter program that comes with Surfer and go to Script | Run.
Alternatively, you can digitize two points on a map and use a different script to calculate the distance between them. The script is located at: http://www.goldensoftware.com/public/scripts/surfer8/DistanceCalc.bas. To use this script, open your Surfer map, right click over the map and go to Digitize. Digitize the two points that you want to measure the distance between. Then open Scripter, open the script and go to Script | Run. The distance will be reported in a window that appears.
