There are 5 types of fill patterns in Surfer:

  • Solid

  • Stock Windows

  • Image 8x8x1 bit per pixel

  • Image picture patterns 8-bits per pixel (most are 256x256)

  • Image 4-bits per pixel (mostly are around 500x500)

When you select a pattern, the type of pattern is displayed at the top of the drop down list:

Solid fill pattern (shown as solid black),
followed by numerous
Stock Windows patterns

Image (8 x 8 x 1bit) patterns

Image (256 x 256 x 8bits) patterns

Image (~500 x 500 x 4bits) patterns

The Vector PDF export does not support color transparency for any of the fill patterns. This includes all fill patterns, backgrounds, missing data, and layer transparency.

If you print to AdobePDF, PDFCreator or CutePDF printer drivers (and perhaps other PDF drivers), it depends on the type of pattern you are printing to the PDF:

  • Solid patterns are exported with transparency and partial transparency.
  • Windows Stock patterns do not appear to be exported with transparency.

  • Image 8 x 8 patterns are exported with transparency.

  • Image 256 x 256 patterns are not exported with transparency. Note that printing these fill patterns and any imported image to a PDF file will take a very long time from Surfer 9.
  • Image 500 x 500 x 4bits per pixel patterns with a completely transparent background are exported (the background will be transparent only if Opacity is set to 0%). The foreground color is not exported with tranparency.

Image base maps are also not printed with transparency. This is not something Golden Software can control, but is controlled by the makers of those printer drivers
