In Surfer 9 and 10 you cannot save a custom line style and add it to the drop down list like you can in Surfer 8. This means if you’ve created a useful line style you need to redefine it every time you want to use it.

Surfer 9 and Surfer 10 saves the line style definitions available in the drop down list in the LineStyles.ini file. If you have a set of lines you created and added to your line list in Surfer 8 (which are saved to the Attrib.ini file), you can copy the line styles from Attrib.ini (Surfer 8) to LineStyles.ini (Surfer 9/10) or you can write them directly in the LineStyles.ini file.

The Attrib.ini and LineStyles.ini file locations depend on the Operating System you are using.

  • Under Windows 2000/XP, both the files are located in the Surfer 8, Surfer 9 or Surfer 10 installation directory.
  • Surfer 8 under Windows Vista/7, the Attrib.ini file is located in: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Golden Software\Surfer\8.
  • Surfer 9 under Windows Vista/7, the LineStyles.ini file is located in the Surfer 9 installation directory. Note: The LineStyles.ini file in the Surfer 9 installation directory is overwritten with each update. If you manually edit this file to include additional line styles, then I suggest you make a back up copy of the file so that if you update your version of Surfer 9 in the future, the changes will not be lost.
  • Surfer 10 under Windows Vista/7, the LineStyles.ini file is located in:  C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Golden Software\Surfer\10.   In Surfer 10, the LineStyles.ini file is not overwritten with each update.

Step-by-step instructions:

Create the custom line style in Surfer 8:

  1. Open Surfer 8.
  2. Draw a polyline.
  3. Select it in the Object Manger.
  4. When the Polyline Properties dialog appears, select Custom from the Style drop-down menu.
  5.  From the Custom Line dialog, create the custom line style.
  6. Click Add to List and click OK.
  7. Click Yes when prompted to Make line table changes permanent.

Transfer the line style to Surfer 9/10:

  1. From the location listed above for Surfer 8, open Attrib.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
  2. Copy the custom line styles from the Attrib.ini file, which is listed under [Line Styles].
  3. Close the text editor.
  4. From the location listed above for Surfer 9 or 10, open LineStyles.ini in a text editor.
  5.  Paste the custom line styles at the bottom of the list of line styles
  6. Save the file and close the text editor. Restart Surfer 9 or 10 to see the changes.

The custom line styles are now added to the styles that are available to call from Surfer 9 and 10 and from Scripter.
