The USGS Seamless data come in many different types of formats, most of which you can use just like any grid file.
For example, you can download GeoTIFF files. The files are TIF files but they actually have a Z value associated with each pixel. This image format is not supported in Surfer 8. In Surfer versions 9 and higher, you would use the TIF file like a grid file. You can make contour maps directly from the TIF, it cannot be loaded as a base map. So the steps are:
- Go to Map | New | Contour Map.
- In the Open Grid dialog, change the Files of Type list to All Files.
- Select the TIF file and click Open.
- The contour map will be created, just like it would be from any other grid file.
