When changing the coordinate system turns the map into a
black blob or a mess of lines, most likely it is because you changed the
coordinate system for the map layer and not for the map itself. For the
difference between setting the coordinate system for a layer and changing it
for the map, please see: http://www.goldensoftware.com/activekb/questions/806.
Be sure you are changing the coordinate system for the
map, and not for the layer. The layer coordinate system should not be changed,
it is the coordinate system of the source data or grid file. You would convert or
change the coordinate system for the map in the map properties.
To do this:
- Select
each layer in your map in the Object Manager.
- In
the Property Manager go to the Coordinate System tab. This is where you
can see the coordinate system for the layer. Be sure that the coordinate system
here is appropriate for the source file for each layer, not what you want the
map to be displayed in. Click the Set button if you need to set or reset the coordinate
system for the layer.
- Once
the source coordinate systems are appropriate for each layer in the map, select
Map in the Object Manager.
- In
the Property Manager, go to the Coordinate System tab. This is where you
can change the coordinate system for the map.
- Click
the Change button.
- In
the Assign Coordinate System dialog, select the coordinate system you want the
map to be displayed in and click OK. The map is changed.
