The Position/Size toolbar always displays the X, Y, H and W values in page units (inches or
centimeters). It tells you the X and Y coordinate location of the lower left
corner of the bounding box. If you have a floating circle (one that is not part
of a base map), the coordinates will be the lower left corner coordinates of
the circle. If the circle is part of the base map, then the coordinates will be
the lower left corner of the base map (not the circle), unless you have entered
the group and then it will show you the XY coordinates of the circle. You can use these entries to draw your circle at a specific radius and centered on a particular XY location.
To create a circle with a certain radius, centered on a particular point
on a map, you can follow these steps:
- First, you’d
have to find out how big to make the circle. For example, if the diameter you want is 200m
(r=100m), use the scale of the map to find out how many inches 200m is.
- Then right
click over the map and go to Add | Empty
Base Layer.
- Right click
over the empty base map layer and go to Enter
Group.
- Go to Draw | Ellipse, hold the Ctrl key down and draw the circle. Press Esc
to exit draw mode.
- After the
circle is drawn, select it and set the W
and H values for the circle in the Position/Size toolbar using the values
calculated above in Step 1.
- The next
step is to position it properly. If you know the center coordinates, then
subtract 100 (the radius) from the center X and Y values to get the coordinates
of the lower left corner.
- Now you need
to see where on the map these coordinates are, and what the corresponding page
units are. Move the cursor over this point on the map, you can see the X and Y coordinates
in map units and page units at the bottom in the status bar.
- Note the XY coordinates
in page units, and type them in for the X
and Y coordinates in the Position/Size toolbar.
- Now the
circle is positioned and sized correctly. Since it is part of a base map layer,
it will move and rescale when you move or rescale the map. Right click over the
base map layer and go to Exit Group.
