Displaying strike and dip
information on a map is a good way to show field data and geologic orientation.
If you have X, Y (lat/long or Northings/Eastings), azimuth (strike) and dip
data, you can display this easily over any map with a post map.
To do this:
- Open your data file in the Surfer worksheet, insert a
new data column, and use Data | Transform to transform your strike
direction (azimuth) data by adding 90 and multiplying by -1 (E=(D+90)*-1).
Save and close the file. This is necessary so that the stike/dip symbol is
oriented correctly.
- Go to Map | New | Post Map (or Map | Add |
Post Layer to add this to another map layer).
- Select the data file and click Open.
- In the Property Manager, on the General
tab, set X Coord and Y Coord for your data.
- Set the Angle = Column E (transformed
azimuth or strike direction).
- Open the Default Symbol | Marker Properties section.
- Change the Symbol Set to GSI Geologic Symbols.
- Change the Symbol to a strike/dip symbol (ie. Symbol
120 or 121).
- If you want to show the labels for the dip amount, go
to the Labels tab and choose to show the labels for the column
containing the dip amount. You may need to adjust the label position
relative to the symbol.
- If necessary, you can right click over the post map and
go to Edit Post Labels to move the dip labels.
- If you do move the post map labels so that the labels
are all at the ends of the dip arrows, you probably then want to
also change the line properties for the Leader Lines to be Invisible.
To do this, select Post in the Object Manager,
and in the Property Manager, go to the Labels tab, and under
Leader Lines | Line Properties, change the Style to Invisible.
Please see attached Surfer 10 file
for example.
If you don’t have field data with
strike and dip information but you have a grid file, you can calculate the
strike and dip information from the grid file in Surfer and then display it on
your map. To calculate the strike and dip values of a grid file, please see the
instructions here: http://www.goldensoftware.com/activekb/questions/776.
