ABOUT THE AUTHOR: I have an appetite for knowledge and a desire to share it! I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2008 with a B.S. in Mass Communication. However, I soon found that this path did not provide the stimulation I craved. I became more and more interested in the changing technologies around me, so I went back to school to study computer programming for a short time before making my way in the tech industry. I provide technical support for all six Golden Software products. I enjoy hearing how our customers use our software in their professional and personal lives. Working at Golden Software provides me the opportunity to learn new things every day while also satisfying my desire to help others. The best part of my day is answering users' questions and helping them solve their problems and display their data in an engaging and informative manner! When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, making my own health and beauty products, seeing live music, and getting outdoors!

MapViewer 8 New Feature Series: The Coordinate System Dialogs

MapViewer 8 New Feature Series: The Coordinate System Dialogs

This week's new feature series is a tutorial on how to use the new coordinate system dialogs in MapViewer 8! If you've used Surfer 12, Didger 5, or Strater 4, the Assign Coordinate System dialog may look familiar, only with a few new perks added! In MapViewer 7, you could access the Map Projection options dialog by clicking the Map | Convert Projection, Map | Calibration, or Tools | Reproject Data File commands, or when importing or creating a map using files with an unknown projection. In MapViewer 8, the Assign Coordinate System dialog can also be accessed from several different places. Most often, the dialog will be accessed by clicking the Change button on the Coordinate System page of the Property Manager. However, this dialog may also be accessed by clicking the Map | Plot | Calibrate command, when adjusting the input or output coordinate system when reprojecting data files with the Home | Data | Reproject Data File(s) commands, or when importing or creating a map using files with an unknown projection.

MapViewer 8 New Feature Series: Text Classes for Hatch and Territory Maps

MapViewer 8 New Feature Series: Text Classes for Hatch and Territory Maps

This week's new feature series focuses on using text columns for classes in hatch maps and territory maps. In previous versions of MapViewer, classes for hatch maps and territory maps required a numerical data value. If you did not have numerical values to use for your classes, it was necessary to assign a numerical to each class, resulting in tedious data modifications. Now, you can create these classes based on a column of text! Create classes based on salespersons' names, geographical regions, or any other string of text!

Below are step-by-step instructions to create a territory map using this convenient new feature! In this example, I am creating a territory map showing which countries are in which continents. I began with a boundary file defiining the countries and a worksheet containing each country name, which is the PID for each object, and the continent to which it belongs, which will be used for the class column. You can download the files I used and the finished projects here. The boundary file, world_countries.gsb, is simply the WORLD.gsb file from the MapViewer 8 Samples directory that I edited to suit my map!
