100 Years of National Park Services

100 Years of National Park Services

In a few short months, the United States National Park Service will celebrate its one hundredth anniversary. August 25, 2016 marks the day when President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the Organic Act. This act created the National Park Service, a federal bureau tasked with “conserving the scenery and the natural and historical objects and the wild life therein…and by such means will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Today, the National Park System covers more than 84 million acres across 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. Over 400 areas consisting of national parks, preserves, monuments, resources, rivers, and historical sites are managed by the National Park Service.

Exploring the New Frontiers in Science

Science is cool and awesome and always evolving. We at Golden Software all like to stay apprised in various ways of what is happening in this broad scientific community. Most scientists are explorers at heart and Golden Software employees definitely fall among this "explorer" group. In the last few weeks, I’ve been amazed by great maps, new finds, and beautiful photography. Here’s a sampling of what’s keeping my interest right now.

NASA maps our solar system with various rovers and spacecraft. Recently, the Dawn spacecraft flew by Ceres, the dwarf planet and largest object in the asteroid belt. One of the unusual observations displayed in the images that NASA received back from Dawn was a mysterious bright spot near the center of Ceres inside a crater. NASA recently released some maps it created of Ceres topography with shaded relief maps. Check out the videos on NASA’s website for the full animation.

World Oceans Day 2015

World Oceans Day 2015

Tuesday, June 8, was the 7th annual World Oceans Day since its official recognition by the United Nations in December of 2008. The yearly observance is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of the world's oceans and their products, celebrating the natural beauty of the oceans, and inspiring others to take action on behalf of the seas.

To celebrate World Oceans Day 2015, Google updated their Oceans Street View collection with stunning underwater images of oceans around the world. Images were collected by the XL Catlin Seaview Survey, a project for scientists and the public to document the health of coral reefs. The images, collected since 2012, will be used as a baseline to monitor the reefs' health over time. Over 100,000 GPS-located images have already been collected by the SVII camera. Additionally, the images are being analyzed, and the data is available in the XL Catlin Global Reef Record.

Do You Use GIS Software Without Knowing It?

Do You Use GIS Software Without Knowing It?

Forbes Magazine recently published a five-part series about GIS (geographic information systems). GIS combines geographic, spatial, and other information into a dynamic system. Golden Software products are often used as a part of such a system. MapViewer and Surfer are often used to create visually stunning maps to present layers of data in a meaningful way, Voxler can be used to present geographic and other data in true 3D, and Strater, Didger, and Grapher also have various applications in GIS. I thought author Louise Kidney brought up some good points that would be of interest to Golden Software users.

You probably already use a GIS more often than you realize!
