Create a Gradient Map in MapViewer 7 and then Modify Certain Properties with a Query

Today, let's make a map that highlights a certain feature. How? I'm going to show you how to make a Gradient map of CO2 emissions by country (for the year 2009) in MapViewer 7, and then apply a unique fill and outline to countries where the CO2 emissions were greater than 15 tonnes/person/year.

  1. From this webpage, highlight and copy the table. Paste it into Notepad and separate out the rows. I've done this for you. Click GreenHouseGases.XLS to download the file created from this step.
  2. Open MapViewer 7. Go to Map | Base Map. Choose the World.GSB file from the Samples directory. Accept the default Import Options by clicking OK.
  3.  Go to Map | Thematic Maps | Gradient Map. Choose your GreenHouseGases.XLS file and click Open.
  4. In the Gradient Options tab of the Gradient Map dialog box, change the Data for min color to 0 and the Data for max color to 60. Set the Undefined/border color to white. Click on Color range and go to Desert.
  5. Click on Color range and then choose Custom. Click on the first node. Change the Scaled node value to 4.374. Repeat for the other nodes: 8.75, 13.125, 17.5, 21.875, 26.25, 30.625. Hold the Ctrl key and click to add another node just before the last node. Its value is 35. I chose 35 as the pseudo-last value because then the medium values show up better, but I left 60 as the last value so values higher than 35 still show up colored and not black. The other nodes are just an even division of 0-35. Click OK.Create a custom fill color for your gradient map
  6. Click OK to exit the Gradient Map dialog box.
  7. Go to Draw | Rectangle. Draw your rectangle around the edges of the page so the entire map is encompassed.
  8. Click on Rectangle in the Object Manager. In the Property Manager change the Fill Properties Pattern to Solid and the Foreground to black.
  9. Go to Map | Legend. Double click on Legend of Layer #1 and change the Foreground to white. Change the text to "CO2 emissions (tonnes/person/year) for 2009" and click OK. Double click on Arial and change Foreground to white. Click OK. Check the box next to Show basic information only. Change Number of columns for samples to 7 and Number of Samples to 6 and click OK.
  10. Click and drag the legend to position it beneath your map.
  11. Go to Analysis | Query. In the Object Data Column double click CO2 emissions (tonnes/person/year) for 2009 from http://www.carbonplanet.com/country_emissions. In the Operator section double click >. Type the number 15 after > in the Where box. Query should be Apply properties to Areas In Map. Click under Line/fill for Properties. Set Pattern to forward slash and Foreground and Color to blue. Set Width to 0.003. Click OK and then OK again.
  12. In the Object Manager click on the first row with Line/Fill blue forward slash. Hold the Ctrl key and click the others as well. In the Property Manager change the Fill Properties Mode to Transparent.
  13. Go to Draw | Text. Click above the map, somewhere north of Washington state in the USA. Type "CO2 emissions by country for 2009 (tonnes/person/year)" in the box at the bottom. Check the box next to Bold, change Points to 18 and Foreground to white. Click OK.
  14. Click and drag to position your title appropriately above the map.
  15. Go to Draw | Text. Click in the bottom right corner of your black bounding box. Type "Source: http://www.carbonplanet.com/country_emissions" in the box at the bottom. Change Points to 10 and Foreground to pale yellow. Click OK.
  16. Click and drag to position your title appropriately above the map.

Now you've successfully created a Gradient Map in MapViewer with certain features accentuated thanks to a Query.
