"Magdalena Deep
Sea Fan"
Created using both MapViewer and Surfer

This is a very nice example of turbiditic fan.
The image was created with multibeam echo-sounder data obtained in the Caribbean
Sea, north of the Magdalena river mouth in Colombia. Deep ranges from -100 m. to
-3990 m.
The distribution of the data is due to the short
search radius used when we created the grid (300 meters) . We used this short
radius in order to avoid artifacts in the map where there is no overlay
between multibeam lines. The maximum distance between beams in the deepest area
is around 100 meters. Artifacts exist in the far beams due to the
impossibility of filtering without a great loss of information. This
shaded map was created without smoothing the grid because we observe a
loss of information for small features, such as narrow channels, when smoothing.
