Strater: Using Schemes to Create Uniform Logs
Back to previous
PART 5: Detailed Case Example
This example is more detailed than the example in Part 4 and will cover most topics regarding schemes.
Create logs using Tutorial 1.xls
The first step is to create your logs from your data. In this example, I will use the data file Tutorial 1.xls,
found in the Strater Samples folder and I will create a classed post, bar, and lithology log.
- Go to Tools | Log Items | Classed Post and click in the log pane where you want the log
to be placed. I’ll click on the left side of the log pane.
- In the Open dialog box, select Tutorial 1.xls and click Open.
- In the Worksheets Found dialog, select the Depth worksheet and click OK.
- In the Specify Worksheet Column Definitions dialog, check the Specify Column Header Row
check box and click Next.
- Click Load and the classed post log is created. In the Property Inspector, note that a
new range scheme called Depth:Au was automatically created and applied when the classed bar log was created.
- Go to Tools | Log Items | Bar and click in the log pane where you want the bar log to
be placed. I’ll click in the center of the log pane.
- In the Open dialog box, select Depth from the Use Current Table list at
the bottom of the dialog and click Open. The bar log is created.
- In the Property Inspector, under Bar Log Properties, change Use Range Scheme to
True and for the Range Scheme select the same scheme as that for the classed post
log from the drop down menu, Depth:Au.
- Go to Tools | Log Items | Lithology and click in a different spot in the log pane. I will click
on the right side of the log pane.
- In the Open dialog box, select Tutorial 1.xls again and click Open.
- In the Worksheets Found dialog, select the Lithology worksheet and click OK.
- In the Specify Worksheet Column Definitions dialog, check the Specify Column Header Row
check box and click Next.
- Click Load and the lithology log is created. A lithology scheme was automatically created for the
log, and the intervals are filled with the default colors of the scheme.
Create a classed post, bar and lithology log from Tutorial 1.xls. A default range
scheme is applied to the classed post and bar log, and a default lithology
scheme is automatically created and applied to the lithology log.
Create Lithology Indent Styles Scheme
Strater automatically created a lithology scheme for the lithology keywords, but it did not automatically
create a lithology indent styles scheme for the indent keywords. This scheme type is not created automatically
because users may not wish to apply lithology indent styles to their lithology log. If you do want to apply
a lithology indent styles scheme, the scheme must be created manually.
- Activate the Database View by clicking on the tab at the top of the window.
- Activate the Lithology data table by clicking on the Lithology tab at the bottom of the window.
- You may consider adding a value in the Indent Scale field, such as 45. This doesn’t affect the
schemes, but does affect the overall appearance of the log in the Borehole View.
- Select a cell in the Indent Keyword field.
- Right click and go to Create Scheme.
Activate the Lithology data table in the Database View, select a cell
in the Indent Keyword field, right click and go to Create Scheme.
- In the New Scheme dialog, you can change the entries if you wish. Change the Scheme Type
to Lithology Lines and click OK. The new scheme is created.
Make any modifications you want to the entries in the
New Scheme dialog and click OK .
- Now go back to the Borehole View, select the lithology log and in the Property Inspector,
in the Lithology Log Properties section, set Indent Percentage Field to Indent Percentage,
Indent Keyword Field to Indent Keyword, set Indent Scale Field to Indent Scale,
select Lithology – Indent Keyword from the drop down menu for Lithology Indent Styles Scheme,
set Use Indent Percentage to True, and set Use Lithology Indent Lines to True.
In the Property Inspector, under Lithology Log
Properties, specify the indent percentage, keyword, and
scale fields, apply the lithology indent styles scheme, and
select to use the indent percentage and lithology indent lines.
Edit the Range Scheme
All three logs are now displayed using the default drawing properties in their respective schemes. These properties
are not ideal, so it is necessary to edit the properties of the schemes in the Scheme Editor. To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Tools | Scheme Editor.
- Open the Depth:Au scheme by clicking on the + button to the left of its name.
- When the range scheme was created, Strater divided the entire data range (from 0 to 803) into
10 equal intervals, or scheme items. I will reduce the number of scheme items to five and
then change the range limits for each of the scheme items to display the data more effectively.
Select the first scheme item in the list and click
the Remove Selected Item
button.
- Repeat for the next 4 items, until you only have 5 items in the scheme.
- Now select the first item in the scheme. When the scheme item is selected, the properties for that item are
displayed on the right side.
- Under the Range Properties section, change the Lower Range Value to 0 and the Upper Range
Value to 50.
- Open the Fill Properties section and change the Foreground color to black. This will
change the lowest level fill color for the bar log to black.
- Open the Symbol Properties section and change the Symbol to a solid square and the Color
to black. This will change the lowest level symbol property for the classed post log.
- Select the second scheme item under Depth:Au and set the Range Properties, Fill
Properties and Symbol Properties for that item. For this item, I will change the Lower
Range Value to 50 and the Upper Range Value to 100. I will use a blue fill color and a
blue solid circle symbol.
- Repeat for the last three scheme items in the Depth:Au scheme. Make sure that the Range Properties
show continuous ranges, which means that the Upper Range Value for one scheme item is the same as
the Lower Range Value for the next scheme item.
Edit the Range Properties, Fill Properties, and Symbol Properties
for each scheme item in the Depth:Au scheme.
- You can click Apply at any time during the editing process to see the changes immediately on the
logs that use the scheme.
Edit the Lithology Scheme
Edit the lithology scheme items the same way that the range scheme items were edited:
- Open the lithology scheme by clicking on the + button to the left of Lithology:Lithology. All 5 scheme
items are displayed.
- Select the first scheme item, Jasperoid, on the left side of the Scheme Editor. The properties
for that item are displayed on the right.
- Change any of the drawing properties you wish for Jasperoid on the right side of the dialog.
For example, I will change the Contact Line Properties to be a thick gold solid line and
the Fill Properties to be a yellow horizontal line pattern.
- Select the other scheme items in the Lithology:Lithology scheme and change their drawing properties
on the right side of the Scheme Editor.
Select the scheme items in the Lithology:Lithology scheme and edit
their properties on the right side of the Scheme Editor.
- You can click Apply at any time during the editing process to see the changes immediately on the
logs that use the scheme.
Edit the Lithology Indent Styles Scheme
Edit the lithology indent styles scheme items the same way that the scheme items for the other two schemes were edited:
- Open the lithology indent styles scheme by clicking on the + button to the left of Lithology – Indent Keyword.
All four scheme items are displayed.
- Select the scheme item Medium-Hard. The properties for that item are displayed on the right. I am going
to change the Line Indent Style on the right side of the dialog to be a slightly more rounded line.
I will also change the line Color to magenta.
- Select the other scheme items in the Lithology – Indent Keyword scheme and change their drawing properties
on the right side of the Scheme Editor.
Select the scheme items in the Lithology – Indent Keyword scheme and edit
the properties of the selected item on the right side in the Scheme Editor.
- You can click Apply at any time during the editing process to see the changes immediately on the
logs that use the scheme.
Click Apply in the Scheme Editor to see the updated scheme
properties displayed in the logs.
Save Scheme
When you use File | Save to save your Strater project as an [.SDG] file, all the schemes are saved within that single file. However, you can
also save the schemes themselves to individual scheme files so you can load them into other projects. This saves you time
because you will not have to remake the same schemes over and over again for different projects. It also offers continuity
between projects as you can be sure you are using the exact same drawing properties for the same data ranges or keywords.
In this example, we will only save the range scheme. Select the Depth-Au scheme name and click the Save Scheme
button. In the Scheme Files dialog, navigate to the folder you want to save the file to,
give the file a name, and click Save. The Depth:Au range scheme is now saved to an [.SCH] file for future use.
Click OK in the Scheme Editor to exit and apply any changes.
Use Saved Scheme File in New Project
Now that the range scheme has been saved, we can use it in a new file. For this example, I will continue to use Tutorial 1.xls
because the data ranges are the same. In actuality, you will most likely use a different data file from the original.
- Go to File | New.
- Go to Tools | Log Items | Bar and click in the log pane where you want the log to be placed.
- In the Open dialog box, select Tutorial 1.xls and click Open.
- In the Worksheets Found dialog, select the Depth worksheet and click OK.
- In the Specify Worksheet Column Definitions dialog, check the Specify Column Header Row
check box and click Next.
- Click Load and the bar log is created with the default fill color.
- Go to Tools | Scheme Editor.
- In the Scheme Editor, click the yellow folder Open Scheme
button.
- Select the [.SCH] file you saved above and click Open.
- Click OK in the Scheme Editor.
- Select the bar log and in the Property Inspector, change the Use Range Scheme value
to True and select the scheme for the Range Scheme from the drop down menu. The scheme
is applied and is just the same as it was originally.
