ABOUT THE AUTHOR: I have an appetite for knowledge and a desire to share it! I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2008 with a B.S. in Mass Communication. However, I soon found that this path did not provide the stimulation I craved. I became more and more interested in the changing technologies around me, so I went back to school to study computer programming for a short time before making my way in the tech industry. I provide technical support for all six Golden Software products. I enjoy hearing how our customers use our software in their professional and personal lives. Working at Golden Software provides me the opportunity to learn new things every day while also satisfying my desire to help others. The best part of my day is answering users' questions and helping them solve their problems and display their data in an engaging and informative manner! When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, making my own health and beauty products, seeing live music, and getting outdoors!

Happy St. Paddy's Day from Golden Software!

Today, March 17, much of the world will be going green to celebrate St. Patrick’s day! March 17 marks the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick, who is credited with spreading Christianity to Ireland. Though St. Patrick was not Irish, the holiday named in his honor is now synonymous with Irish culture, or at least Irish food and drink! Here in the United States, we’ll eat corned beef and cabbage, drink Irish beer, and wear green shamrocks with hopes of securing a bit of that luck o’ the Irish! In honor of St. Paddy, I’ve created a map showing where the most Americans live that identify as Irish American, and I’ve compiled some fun facts about the holiday and traditions surrounding it!

Where Irish Americans live; 33.3 million Americans (about 10.5%) identify as Irish American. Click on the map to open a larger image.

An Antarctic Adventure!

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Golden Software President Pat Madison to talk about his exciting trip to Antarctica! Pat's 5-day excursion with his wife and friends began on January 29, 2015 in Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego, deemed the "Land of Fire" by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Ushuaia is widely regarded as the southernmost city in the world.

From Ushuaia, Pat's ship made an overnight journey to his first stop, the Falkland Islands. Ushuaia was the only location on the trip that had docks, so when the ship neared the Falkland Islands, Pat and his crew hopped in zodiac boats and zipped over to the islands where they spent a windy afternoon exploring. They had the opportunity to see sheep, penguins, seals, and albatross while visiting the Falkland Islands. Pat was fascinated by the albatross, who need the wind in order to fly due to their narrow wings.

Golden Software Celebrates 32 Years in Business with a 32% Discount!

Golden Software is excited to celebrate 32 years in business this March!

It all started in 1983 when Colorado School of Mines computer science instructor Pat Madison and mining graduate student Dan Smith developed Golden Software's first product, PlotCall, which transformed plotter instructions into dot-matrix instructions. PlotCall opened the doors of computer graphing and mapping to many users who did not have access to more expensive hardware, such as mainframe computers and plotter printers. That was only the beginning! Today, Golden Software develops, sells, and supports six data visualization software applications, Surfer, Grapher, Voxler, Strater, Didger, and MapViewer! Our products are used worldwide in a variety of industries.

MapViewer 8 New Feature Series: The Coordinate System Dialogs

This week's new feature series is a tutorial on how to use the new coordinate system dialogs in MapViewer 8! If you've used Surfer 12, Didger 5, or Strater 4, the Assign Coordinate System dialog may look familiar, only with a few new perks added! In MapViewer 7, you could access the Map Projection options dialog by clicking the Map | Convert Projection, Map | Calibration, or Tools | Reproject Data File commands, or when importing or creating a map using files with an unknown projection. In MapViewer 8, the Assign Coordinate System dialog can also be accessed from several different places. Most often, the dialog will be accessed by clicking the Change button on the Coordinate System page of the Property Manager. However, this dialog may also be accessed by clicking the Map | Plot | Calibrate command, when adjusting the input or output coordinate system when reprojecting data files with the Home | Data | Reproject Data File(s) commands, or when importing or creating a map using files with an unknown projection.
